Red Cross, Mayor Rivera canvassing neighborhoods to kickoff Sound the Alarm initiative

CENTRAL FALLS, RI (March 31, 2023) — On Saturday, April 1, at 11:00 a.m., Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera and local community leaders are partnering with the American Red Cross of Rhode Island to spread the word about the upcoming Sound the Alarm event on April 29. Our team will be canvassing neighborhoods and letting residents know how to sign up for a FREE smoke alarm installation.

Two minutes may be all one has to escape a home fire – our nation’s most common disaster. Early warning from a working smoke alarm could save a life.

“We are so grateful for our growing partnership with the Central Falls community,” said Susan Roberts, Executive Director, American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter. “We look forward to collaborating on our Sound the Alarm event for a second consecutive year. Smoke alarms save lives. Together, we are making more homes and families safer in Central Falls and beyond.”

“House fires have been a devastating reality for some of our families in our city, and we want to do all we can to ensure our residents are protected and prepared,” said Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera. “I want to thank the American Red Cross of Rhode Island for being such an important partner to our city, and for stepping up to help proactively ensure our residents have added fire safety protection and support in their homes.”

The April 1 canvassing event will kick off the Red Cross’ 2023 Sound the Alarm initiative, which is part of their national Home Fire Campaign. Here in Rhode Island, the Red Cross and local partners have installed 7,377 free smoke alarms, serving at least 7,206 individuals. The Red Cross plans to install around 400 alarms during this year’s Sound the Alarm event.

The Red Cross will return to Central Falls and visit Pawtucket on Saturday, April 29, to install free smoke alarms in areas in need. Residents can schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm and home fire safety education by visiting soundthealarm.org/RhodeIsland or by calling 1-877-287-327, option one.
