Fire Wardens

  • Fire wardens are employees of a building designated to be responsible for getting everyone out of the building safely in the case of an emergency evacuation and during drills. They also conduct headcounts at the meeting location.
  • OSHA recommends 1 fire warden for every 20 employees.
  • Wardens should have training on the workplace layout to know where all alternative exit routes are located.
  • Wardens should be aware of which employees may need assistance during an emergency evacuation.
  • Wardens check all rooms and enclosed areas for employees who may have become trapped or not been able to evacuate.
  • Following the fire warden protocol will provide a high level of accountability for all persons in the workplace to ensure they escape safely.
