Mission Statement

The Animal Control Officer is tasked with protecting and improving the quality of life for our pets and our community through disease prevention, education, and support services.

Licensing Your Dog

Every owner or caretaker of a dog, cat or ferret over the age of four months is required to obtain a certificate of rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian. Failure to do so may result in a minimum $200 fine for each offense.

Please bring the copy of your pet’s vaccination certificate to the City Clerk’s Office on the 1st floor of City Hall along with payment of an $11.00 fee (payable in cash, check, or money order. Upon receipt of the certificate and payment, we will then stamp your certificate with your pet’s new license number.

Sick or Injured Pets

If you have or have found a sick or injured cat or dog that needs treatment, please call the Animal Control Officer at the number at the top of the left-hand column for help. (401) 727-7411

Adoption

Due to resource constraints, the City does not have an animal shelter and is therefore unable to take in owned animals. It is the owner’s responsibility to relocate a pet once in their possession. Stray animals will be held at a shelter for five days and then will be turned over to the Pawtucket Animal Shelter for adoption. Please call the Animal Control Officer at (401) 727-7411 to report a missing pet – or you can stop by the police station and ask for the Animal Control Officer.
