The City of Central Falls Planning & Economic Development Department is responsible for the development, implementation, and ongoing updates of the City’s Zoning Ordinance and Land Use Regulations. These regulations define how land can be used throughout the city and guide the physical development of neighborhoods, commercial districts, and industrial areas. 

Through careful stewardship of the city’s zoning laws and land use regulations, our department ensures that the development of Central Falls is organized, sustainable, and harmonious. Zoning Ordinances


We lead efforts to draft, update, and refine the city’s zoning ordinances to ensure that they reflect modern needs, urban planning trends, and best practices. The Zoning Ordinance regulates what activities and structures are permitted in various zones within the city, such as residential, commercial, or industrial districts. Land Use Regulations


In addition to zoning ordinances, our department assists in developing comprehensive land use regulations that govern the appropriate use of land throughout the city. These regulations are designed to ensure that land development supports the city’s long-term goals for environmental sustainability, economic vitality, and livability.

Our responsibilities include:

  • Development of land use regulations: Crafting and updating regulations that define acceptable land uses in different areas of the city, from residential neighborhoods to commercial and industrial zones.
  • Ensuring compatibility: We assess proposed developments to ensure that they are compatible with surrounding uses and that they meet the city’s land use goals, whether for housing, economic development, or recreational purposes.
  • Environmental stewardship: Ensuring that new developments consider environmental impact, including water management, green space preservation, and sustainable building practices.
  • Review of proposed developments: The Planning & Economic Development Department evaluates development proposals to confirm that they comply with land use regulations and align with the city’s broader planning vision.

By managing land use regulations, we ensure that development in Central Falls is not only in line with zoning requirements but also consistent with the city’s vision for growth, quality of life, and environmental responsibility.

Combined Planning & Zoning Board


Our department provides administrative and technical assistance to the Combined Planning & Zoning Board.

Overview of our responsibilities:

  • Administration: Administrative recordkeeping and documentation for both boards.
  • Public engagement: Coordinating public notices, hearings, and meetings for both boards.
  • Technical assistance: Providing review and analysis of development proposals and zoning issues.

Public Engagement
